Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Unit at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta: Curing Kids’ Cancer has a goal of endowing the clinical research office at the Aflac Cancer Center. Killian Owen – the inspiration for Curing Kids’ Cancer – was treated at the Aflac Center, which has been recognized as one of the top children’s cancer centers by U.S. News and World Report.

University of Maryland: A $40,000 grant was awarded to the University of Maryland for ground-breaking research being conducted by Dr. Curt Civin and Dr. Dr. Xiaochun Chen. The research involves involves recently discovered “microRNAs,” tiny snippets of RNA (ribonucleic acid) that until recently were thought of merely as “molecular sawdust.” In fact, Dr. Civin’s research shows that by replacing or increasing the microRNAs in leukemia cells they can be prevented from reproducing and eventually they die off.
